Colonial Song0:03–5:49

A short piece built from a wistful, bending tune. The first section (A) gives way to B and then C. A new section, D, follows. Then the B material comes back in varied form (B′) and rounds off the piece. Listen for the many small changes of and meter, which make the phrases stretch and relax, and for the countermelodies that move in the inner parts beneath the tune.

  1. A
  2. B

Section boundaries in music are not always sharp; a transition may be felt over a pause or a held chord.
