I 0:15–10:02
Marked to be played fantastically and passionately, this is heard as three large parts. The opening material twice around lyrical themes and a bravura . Then the marking Im Legendenton (in the manner of a legend) brings a quieter central , which is ornamented and then comes back. The opening music in A′, and the carries the Beethoven quotation.

Section boundaries in music are not always sharp; a transition may be felt over a pause or a held chord.
