Sonata form0:39–14:19

The slow presents the Pilgrims' Chorus: it enters alone, swells and fades away. The fast follows with the restless music of the Venusberg, and Tannhäuser's own song joins it. The reworks this material. Then the starts. The closes with the Pilgrims' Chorus again, now in the trombones.

Section boundaries in music are not always sharp; a transition may be felt over a pause or a held chord.
