A short , a woodwind answered by strings, opens the piece. Then the gently rocking (A) begins, matching the soprano's first words about the evening. B and C carry the scene on, and not long before the short A′ the music turns agitated with the staccato, plucked streetcar . Sections D and P lead on to the last of the opening (A″), as the boy is put to bed. The instruments rise and float away.
