The cello sings a sombre, long-breathed melody in C minor over a moving piano accompaniment. The (B) turns to a major : the piano takes up the first and then passes it to the cello, and the section ends with a forceful exchange between the two. The opening (A′), loud at first, but its quiet seriousness soon comes back and the piece ends in calm.
