Nun will die Sonn' so hell aufgeh'n (Now the sun will rise as brightly). Mahler marks the song schwermütig (heavy-hearted). It is in D minor and begins with bare, almost single-line music that gradually gains fuller harmony. The singer sees the sun rise as if the night had been untroubled, though the loss is his alone. The opening music twice (A′ and A″) around a contrasting section (B), and then the begins.

Section boundaries in music are not always sharp; a transition may be felt over a pause or a held chord.
