The snare drum begins alone in the with the two- rhythm that never stops. The first melody (A) enters on flute, and the second (B), with its syncopations and flattened notes, follows. This pair, each melody played twice, comes round again three more times. In the last round each melody is heard once. Near the end the jumps to E major for eight .
