(not fast), in F-sharp minor. A broken-chord piano part, like a guitar, runs through the song and gives it a gently moving background, and the voice shapes a rising fifth that will through the cycle. A short leads into A, a contrasting B, A′ and a . Schumann wrote it in 1840 but finished it only in 1849, so it opens only the revised edition.
