Part 1 is slow: the sick man lies on his cot, and two dreamy themes sound in the flute and the oboe, the oboe one standing for childhood innocence. Part 2 is the battle between life and death, with a sharp timpani strike and a syncopated rhythm like laboured breathing. In Part 3 his past passes through a feverish delirium, and the brass present the of the ideal. Part 4 is the transfiguration, where the childhood and ideal themes reach their final glory.
