The Prélude is not a dance and has no marking. It is built from broken chords (arpeggios: a chord's notes played one after another), first over a low G that stays put under the changing harmonies, much like the C major Prelude BWV 846 of The Well-Tempered Clavier. Part 1 stops on a long D marked with a pause. Part 2 dwells on D harmony; from the a low D keeps sounding beneath the moving notes and a scale. The arpeggios bring back the opening pattern, now crossing the strings the other way.

Section boundaries in music are not always sharp; a transition may be felt over a pause or a held chord.
