Bells heard through rustling leaves. The piece is soft almost throughout, apart from two chords in the middle, and the player must balance several lines at once. The opening music (A) is based on the whole-tone scale, a scale of six notes a whole step apart, and a leads to the contrasting B section. Somewhere before the opening (A′), the music reaches a in E major.
